Do I Need an EICR on My Commercial Premises in Sheffield?
One of the key services we here at Smart Electricians provide to customers across Sheffield, Rotherham and Chesterfield is Electrical Installation Conditioning Reports (EICRs). An EICR is an essential service that needs to be carried out on both domestic and commercial properties at regular intervals, usually every five years but this depends on the nature of your premises.
Am I Required to Have an EICR?
As mentioned above, an EICR is an essential service. While it is not a legal requirement, an EICR can help protect your property and anyone inside it. In fact, EICRs are used by business owners, landlords, homeowners, schools, churches, and leisure centres, to name but a few.
What is the Purpose of an EICR for Commercial Buildings?
EICRs are important because they protect your employees from potential electrical risks. Think of it as an MOT for your electrical installations.
The tests are carried out by qualified electricians such as ourselves, who provide you with an eight page report after completion of a full inspection of the electrical systems within your commercial premises. Essentially, these reports identify damage and defects within your electrical systems, and are actually required for insurance purposes. After all, prevention is often cheaper than reactive maintenance. The tests can ensure your building is safe, the electrics are correctly installed, and everything is well-maintained.
If you are moving to a new commercial premises, it would be wise to have an EICR carried out beforehand, to give you a good idea as to what condition the property’s electrical systems are in before you commit to buying or signing a lease agreement.
How Long Does an EICR Take?
The length of time it takes to complete the EICR inspection will depend on the size of your commercial property. Sometimes it can take as little as a couple of hours, whereas other times it can take day. With that said, Smart Electricians charge for the EICR on a per circuit basis. Please get in touch on 0330 043 2031 if you require a quote.
What Happens if the EICR Finds Faults?
Within the report, we will detail any faults that were found and why that particular electrical system failed the EICR. Some of the issues that can be revealed through an EICR are as follows:
- Areas that might be at risk of causing electric shocks or a fire
- Faulty electrical work that could lead to injury
- Issues with circuits or equipment that might overload/overheat the system
We can talk you through how any problems found can be resolved so that you can eventually reach the required standard and keep your commercial property safe. Once any remedial work has been completed, you will be given an EICR Certificate of Safety. This will give you the peace of mind that your commercial building and anyone inside it is safe.
