Going Green: Smart Electricians’ Top Tips for Reducing Energy Consumption in Sheffield Commercial Properties

Reducing your carbon footprint and cutting back on energy costs are two major concerns for business owners. Fortunately, the two go hand in hand. In other words, if you reduce one, you can reduce the other. If you’re wondering how it can be done, Smart Electricians have put together the following top tips…

Ensure Your Staff Turn Off Equipment to Reduce Energy Waste

Many of us are guilty of leaving our desktop computers in stand-by mode overnight so that they are quicker to turn back on in the morning. Unfortunately, this is a waste of electricity and bad for the environment. With this in mind, Smart Electricians would recommend you alert your staff of your efforts to be kinder to the environment and your goal to reduce energy costs, either through a team meeting or via your company newsletter. Ask your staff to ensure all technology, lighting and other equipment are properly switched off at the end of each day. This includes things like printers and photocopiers, as well as the overhead lights.

Install a Programmable Thermostat

A smart thermostat in your commercial property can significantly reduce your heating costs. It will allow you to control the heating more closely so that you’re not wasting energy. In other words, you can ensure that the thermostat is reduced during non-working hours so that you’re not heating an empty building.

Swap Your Lightbulbs to Improve Energy Efficiency

Replacing the inefficient bulbs in your commercial building with LEDs can save you a significant amount of money. LEDs are also kinder to the environment. They require far less energy than incandescent alternatives which tend to waste much of the electricity they use as heat. LEDs, on the other hand, use very little heat, which is not only more efficient but also safer. With regards to lighting, it would also be wise to locate your workstations near windows where possible. This will allow you to harvest the daylight.

Inspect Your Equipment

By regularly inspecting your equipment, you can ensure they are functioning as designed and not wasting any energy. At Smart Electricians, we offer a PAT testing service to clients across Sheffield that ensure your electrical items are fit for purpose, and also safe to use.
